Consent Information
Massage is a simple, yet powerful healing art. On a physical level massage facilitates the circulation of blood and lymph and increases the rate of removal of waste products. It improves joint range of movement by mobilising and warming up soft tissues. Massage can be used to alleviate pain and discomfort in a number of situations and can be good for rehabilitation purposes post-operative.
Massage is an effective and safe form of treatment, however, like any treatment, there are benefits and risks. The purpose of this form is to let you know what your rights are and how we address the issue of a collaborative decision making and informed consent between therapist and client.
As your massage therapist, I will discuss your condition and options for treatment with you so that you are appropriately informed and can make decisions relating to your treatment. You may choose to consent or refuse any form of treatment for any reason including religious or personal grounds. Once you have given consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time.
Questions of a personal nature – I may ask personal questions relating to your complaint and how it impacts your daily living. The more information you provide, the more likely it is I can provide effective treatment. It is your choice as to what information you disclose. If you feel uncomfortable with a particular question or group of questions, please let me know and I will cease.
Physical contact – During the examination, assessment and treatment, it will be necessary that I make physical contact with you. You will always be asked for permission before physical contact is made in any way. Physical contact requires express consent. You may withdraw consent at any time, at which point, all physical contact will cease immediately.
Dry Needling – After the initial examination, I may propose to do dry needling. Dry needling is a technique using a fine flexible and single use sterile needle. It releases shortened bands of muscle caused by abnormal functioning of the nervous system. Like any procedure, there can be complications. Although they are uncommon, they sometimes occur and must be considered prior to giving consent. No drugs are injected. Dry needling may cause increased pain for 1 to 3 days followed by an expected improvement overall. The increased pain is related to overactive shortened muscle bands that have not been released and to the soreness caused by the ‘twitching’ of the muscles. Any time a needle is used there is a risk of infection. However, I use new, disposable and sterile needles, and infections are extremely rare. A needle may be placed inadvertently in an artery or vein. If an artery or vein is punctured with the needle, a bruise may develop. If a nerve is touched, it may cause a prickling sensation which is usually brief but may continue for a few days. When a needle is placed close to the chest wall, there is a rare possibility of getting air in the chest cavity. Fortunately, all these complications are not fatal and are readily reversible.
Draping and privacy – Depending on the particular treatment that is agreed to, you may be asked to undress outer layers of clothing. At no time should your underwear be removed. If you feel uncomfortable in removing any particular item of clothing prior to the treatment let me know. During your treatment, your personal space and privacy will be respected. You will be draped with no fewer than two towels at any time and the only body part that will be exposed is the body part being treated. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, or wish to cease the treatment, please let me know and treatment will cease immediately.
Children, minors and substituted consent – Consent from a custodial parent is required to treat a minor and must be present during any treatment of a child or minor. Where a person is incapable of understanding the treatment, consent may be provided by another person legally authorised to provide such consent. Evidence of legal authorisation is required in such circumstances.
